Country of Culture & Living God
There are many places of religious importance in Nepal of these the temples which manifest Nepali architecture hold special importance. If we visit the Kathmandu valley, we can find a great number of temples of several gods and goddesses here. That's why the Kathmandu valley is known as "the home of gods and goddesses" and Nepal is called "the country of temples". These temples are surrounded by elevated pavement to protect them from dust, water and damp. Some of the temples are surrounded by ten or twelve steps of pavement and the temple stands at the highest point. Jaisideval of Kathmandu and Nyatapol of Bhaktapur are good examples of such temples. These temples have got a steeple on the top. Likewise, there are many temples built in pagoda style. Krishna Mandir of Patan is excellent examples of this style. There are also Buddhist temples called 'Bihars' in a great number. Bihars are built in the form of a large square platform. Generally on the ground floor of the southern part of 'Bihar' the statue of lord Buddha is set up.
In the history of Nepalese art, the earthenware artifacts are as interesting as the artifacts made of stone and metals. Similarly, the display of excellent wood work can be seen on the struts and main gates of temples and the windows and doors of the house. The images of gods and goddesses engraved on wooden struts, and plenty of temples can be seen at different places.
